I’ve taken some knitting classes in the past and it’s safe to say I’m still very much a beginner but there’s something about crafting, learning something new and creating a finished product that appeals to me.
Clearly, it appeals to a lot of people because Katie Dynes and Darlene Phillips of Love it Sew in Avon, Indiana, are offering daily classes. Whether you’re a veteran seamstress or just getting started, they’ve got the materials, lessons and experience you need.
Darlene has been quilting for many years, even long arming (a quilting method) in her basement for a while. When she visited her youngest daughter, Katie, at her Knoxville, Tenn., college the two went to a quilting show, and Katie was hooked.
Together, they opened a small shop in Avon, and this summer, celebrated a move to a more expansive store just down the street.
Sign up for a variety of classes from embroidery to quilting and from cross stitch to wool hooking. Even better, attendees don’t have to bring a thing. At Love it Sew, they have access to a room full of top-notch Bernina sewing equipment.
Katie said she’s had several people in the last few years come to her having never sewn before. They took her beginner sewing class and the beginner quilting class, and they are good to go.
Join the block of the month club. It’s similar to individual classes offered, but you’re meeting with the same group once per month, over eight or ten months, to complete a different block or section of a quilt.
It allows beginners to receive instruction and practice several different skills. Think of it as the ultimate DIY, and in the end, you've put together an entire quilt.
In addition to classes, Love it Sew is the perfect place to pick up fabric, supplies and even a sewing machine if you’re ready. Not only can you pick up quilting supplies but with the new interest in making our own clothes and other skills, they’ve got you covered in both classes and products in the store.
