In a world full of modern conveniences, we must pursue intentional exercise to stay healthy. Perhaps the most popular form of exercise is running, in particular, long-distance running. With thousands of marathons and mini-marathons across America, the sport has become a part of our cultural fabric.

If you're like me, and enjoy this sport, Plainfield, Indiana, has a series of running events coming Sept. 22, 2024, called Back Your Badge. Back Your Badge has a little something for everyone, ranging from the 5K (3.1 miles), all the way up to a full marathon (26.2 miles).

Here's everything you need to know to plan for this great event.

Back Your Badge

Back Your Badge Mini Marathon.

The town has partnered with RaceMaker Productions to make this an event a USA Track & Field Certified Course.

Back Your Badge will traverse historic U.S. 40, Plainfield Parks expansive trails system, past cultural landmarks and public safety agencies within the town. The marathon and half marathon both start at 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 22 with the 5K starting at 7:45 a.m.

All three races start and finish at the Richard A. Carlucci Recreation and Aquatic Center, 851 Vestal Road.

The day before the races, Sept. 21, a small expo will be held where you can pick up your race packet and carb load with a pasta dinner provided by Cunningham Restaurant Group.

What To Expect

The namesake for Back Your Badge sets a goal of every participant identifying a first responder to support. They get three options. They can choose the Plainfield police, fire department or 911 dispatchers.

Depending on who you choose, each mile you run or walk will be added to the agency's total. The agency with the most miles will win the traveling trophy. The police, fire and communications agencies of Plainfield have made huge commitments to the health and wellness of their personnel, and the Back Your Badge races will be a wonderful reflection of that.

This will be a huge event for the community, bringing in numerous visitors, showcasing the town's historic sites, beauty and local businesses and attractions and showing a commitment to its residents and the community as a whole.
